Child Sponsorship

The majority of children that are sponsored through Seedlings for Christ attend our school.
If you have a question about sponsorship or if you are interested then this is the page for you. We hope you find it interesting and helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to sponsor or if you can not find what you want here.

We currently have a number of children looking for your help.

and be given the opportunity to live a better life.

How much does it cost?

It costs £15 a month to sponsor a child. This covers their school fees, uniform, school bag, books and is used towards rent and teachers wages at Seedlings School. It also provides a meal in the day for them. There is a £20 starter fee that is payable upfront, this basically starts the child up with uniform, shoes, a bag and books. (Please note: it may cost more that £15 a month if your child is in higher education eg. college)

How do I pay?

There is only 1 way available to pay for your child's sponsorship and this is monthly by standing order. You will be informed of the exact amount payable each month when you receive information about your child. This will normally be £15 a month. You will be asked to pay the £20 starter fee when you first start before the child's information is sent to you.

How much of my donation reaches my sponsor child?

Every penny you donate for sponsorship goes directly to pay for your child to attend school. It is used mainly for teachers wages, rent, exercise books, text books, uniform, shoes, school bag and lunch. Seedlings for Christ is a non-profit making organisation and all trustees and members are volunteers. All members of groups visiting The Gambia pay their own way for flights and also once they are there. We therefore have no staffing costs although some money is taken out of the main donation fun for administration costs. This however is kept to a minimum and is not taken from the money you give for sponsorship of your child.

Can I correspond with my child?

Yes. We have found that children in The Gambia love to hear from their sponsors. With the details of your child will be their date of birth (if known) in order for you to send them a birthday card if you wish to.

Can I send presents?

As a group, Seedlings for Christ aim to visit Gambia and the projects they are working on twice a year. There will also be other visits from individuals of the group throughout the year and you are encouraged to send any small, light weight presents out with them then. You will be informed of when they are going as well as some ideas of presents. You are not advised to send parcles out via the post as it is not very safe and things will often go missing before they reach their destination.
You might find it easier to send a small finacial gift with the group to your child's family instead of a present. This is easier for the group to take and will really benifit the child's whole family. You will be given idea's of the cost of things in Gambia and how much is a reasonable amount to send when the group are going.

Will I hear back from my child?

Yes. Letters are written in school time as a class activity so you will receive something. It is very rare that a child does not want to write to their sponsor but as they write in English it can sometimes be a very daunting and hard task. If they are too young to write to you then they will often draw you a picture.
The school also sends out progress reports which will be forwarded onto you so that you can read about how well they are doing. Letters you recieve will be sent onto you by Seedlings for Christ as it is quite normal for the school to give a baulk of them all at once on visits. Please though, we encourage you to communicate regularly with your child by using our facebook page

How long will my sponsorship last?

Sponsorship should be seen as an ongoing commitment. Although there is nothing stating how long you should sponsor for, we encourage you to commit to the amount of time your child attends our school. If you start sponsoring your child from a young age then there is the potential to sponsor that child for around 6 years. Once the children finish grade 6 they move onto an Upper Basic school which is free so they will no longer need your sponsorship.
It is important that you consider this very carefully. If you would rather, you can give a donation to the school itself or consider one of our other sponsorship options (eg sponsoring a teacher, the food programme etc). There is nothing worse for a child to start attending school only to be pulled out as their sponsor has not continued with the program.
So please, we urge you to consider this very carefully.

What happens to my child if I can not continue to sponsor?

Do not worry if for some reason you cannot continue with your commitment. Simply advise us as we can cancel your sponsorship with immediate effect. Seedlings for Chrit will try to find a new sponsor as soon as possible to prevent your child loosing their school place.
